How we helped a corporate lawyer combat chronic stress and build healthier boundaries
When personal and work life stresses become unmanageable
Corporate law is built on judgement, precision and strong client relationships. When stress becomes unmanageable, those qualities can quickly come under threat. To protect the standards their role demands, lawyers need practical tools to manage pressure before it tips into burnout.
A corporate lawyer, we’ll call her Charlotte to protect her identity, came to GYST after a prolonged period of personal and professional pressure.
On the outside, she was still functioning. But underneath, chronic stress, anxiety and burnout were affecting how she felt about work, her future and herself. She knew something needed to change, but the issues felt tangled and difficult to separate.
Through one-to-one coaching, we helped Charlotte slow things down, understand what was driving the pressure and create practical steps she could actually use. The work gave her a calmer way to approach stress, stronger boundaries at work and a healthier foundation for life beyond her professional role.

The Challenge
Charlotte’s situation was not caused by one issue alone. Work pressure, personal expectations, anxiety about the future and poor boundaries had all started to feed into each other.
Setting limits at work felt almost impossible. Like many high-achieving professionals, Charlotte was used to pushing through and doing what was expected. Over time, that pattern left little space for recovery, perspective or choice.
The impact was significant. Charlotte described the period before coaching as one where she felt hopeless. Her mental health had deteriorated, her physical health had been affected, and her confidence in the future had been shaken.
For someone in a demanding legal role, this kind of pressure can become normalised quickly. When stress is treated as part of the job, people often only stop when their health forces them to.
By that point, stress is no longer just a personal cost. It can compromise the judgement, precision and client care that high-quality legal work depends on.
Fortunately, Charlotte had the courage and foresight to reach out to GYST for help.
The GYST approach
Our coaching sessions gave Charlotte a calm, confidential space to define what she was dealing with, rather than holding everything as one overwhelming problem. Together, we separated the different pressures, looked at what was driving them and identified where practical change was possible.
The work explored the connections between Charlotte’s anxiety, work patterns, boundaries, relationships, health and future goals. By looking at the whole picture, we helped her understand why certain situations felt so difficult and what she needed in order to respond differently.
The aim was to help her move from feeling trapped by pressure to feeling more able to act. That meant building self-awareness, creating structure and supporting her to make decisions from a steadier place.
Charlotte valued the fact that the sessions looked at more than work alone.
We explored her health, relationships, motivation, anxiety and wider goals, because each area was influencing the others. This helped the changes feel more connected and sustainable, rather than treating stress as an isolated workplace issue.

Executive coaching
GYST’s approach is structured, practical and grounded in real behaviour. Our executive coaching gives high-performing professionals the chance to step out of constant pressure and understand what is really shaping their behaviour. It is a calm but challenging process, helping people recognise the patterns, boundaries and stress responses that are affecting how they work, think and relate to others.
Sessions are one-to-one and usually take place every two weeks over six months. The work typically focuses on three stages:
- understanding personal stress patterns and the behaviours that keep them in place
- setting clearer priorities, boundaries and healthier working habits
- testing and strengthening those changes in real situations, with support and accountability along the way
We looked at the patterns that were keeping her stuck, including the pressure to keep going, the difficulty of switching off and the anxiety that made future decisions feel overwhelming. The support was practical, honest and grounded in the reality of a demanding legal career.
A key part of the work was helping Charlotte build healthier boundaries at work.
This helped reduce the constant drain on her energy and gave her more space to recover, think and relate to others differently.

The result
The skills Charlotte developed aren’t separate from her professional performance. In a profession where judgement and difficult decisions are everything, they are her professional performance.
Since our work, Charlotte’s response to stress has changed. She now feels better able to pause, define the issue, calm her anxiety and create a plan of action.
The boundaries she has put in place have improved her health and relationships. She feels more empowered at work and more capable of protecting what she needs in order to function well.
For GYST, this is what meaningful burnout prevention looks like. Not a quick fix, but a practical shift in how someone understands themselves, responds to pressure and builds a healthier way forward.
“Working with Katie has been transformative for me. I feel like a completely different person. Today, even when dealing with a stressful situation, I am able to handle that exponentially better than before. I feel empowered because I have set healthy boundaries that greatly improved my health and relationships.”
